Work Stoppage

Your Pension During a Work Stoppage

There are several Manitoba registered pension plans that have unionized members. If you are a unionized member in one of these plans, you may be affected by a work stoppage initiated by your union at some point during your plan membership.

During a work stoppage, your membership in the plan will continue however no pension contributions shall be made by yourself or your employer. This means your pensionable service will not increase during this time.

Some plan administrators will treat this period of time as an unpaid leave of absence and may offer plan members an opportunity to purchase the missed service once you return to work. Plan members should contact their plan administrator to find out if a buyback of this missed service would be made available to them.

Please note that an active pension plan member cannot unlock or access pension funds due to a work stoppage.
